History With A Bit Of Bite

American Woodmark employees

While the Waypoint brand is not all that old, American Woodmark has a history that might surprise you with how it all started. It began with the simple opportunity for a Long Island-based dentist named Alvin Goldhush. He wasn’t very happy with the cabinetry that he used to store all the various dental tools and equipment in his dental office back in 1951. Essentially, Alvin became one of the first ergonomic designers of dentistry cabinets.

After this proved to be a success for him, he thought outside the box and started to manufacture dental cabinets for others within the dental industry. It was a near-instant success which allowed him to form a company called Formed Laminates Inc. and then later- Raygold Industries. Amazingly he expanded his vision of cabinetry that was emerging quickly in the home market and started manufacturing kitchen cabinets in the 1970s.

By 1971, he had reached a whopping $6 million in sales which caught the eye of Boise Cascade who immediately were determined to buy out Alvin’s share of Raygold Industries. This was a strategic move by four wealthy and ambitious executives who worked for Boise Cascade. These included Al Graber, Jeff Holcomb, Bill Brandt, and Don Mathias. With their buyout completed, they formed a totally new company aptly named American Woodmark Corporation.

They opened three new facilities with only 1,100 employees at that time. They grew steadily, offering various kitchen cabinet designs until 1990 when the Timberlake cabinet brand line was introduced. Having secured contracts with outlets such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, they were able to survive the recession of 2008 and steadily grew popular until Bill Brandt expanded on his vision of distribution of their cabinetry services even further.

By 2010, this is when the Waypoint product line was established and opened the door for independent kitchen designer showrooms. This brings us to the present day where over 4,500 team workers are part of American Woodmark among 17 various factories all over the USA. This makes American Woodmark a modern American success story that all started with a dentist who just wanted to improve his dental cabinets.

As for Dr. Goldhush (the unsung dentist who started it all), he quietly retired and enjoyed the buyout profits until the rest of his life up to the ripe age of 79 when he passed away in September of 1998.

Under the direction of American Woodmark, Waypoint is best known these days for its Waypoint Living Spaces cabinet line. They offer a wide range of cabinetry products that are all designed to meet the needs of different consumers. Because their products are made to order, they have created a simple ordering process for semi-custom kitchen cabinets that meet the requirements of those who order from them.

While they specialize mainly in kitchen cabinets, they further offer bathroom vanities and a complete selection of cabinet doors. What makes them stand out for quality is the wide range of simple to intricate designs that appeal to nearly everyone’s taste in cabinetry. This includes styles that range from traditional to modern designs. They also have an effective manufacturing method that is speedy and efficient.

Construction and materials

Believe it or not, the Waypoint cabinet line isn’t completed at one single factory. There are actually three separate facilities that handle all of the Waypoint Living Space cabinet orders. The first is a factory is located in Cumberland, Maryland, where doors and frames are assembled. This factory covers 9 acres and manufactures every door and frame from construction to the detailed finishes that are applied.

After this, everything is sent off to a second location no more than 10 kilometers away in Allegheny, Maryland. This is where assembly happens and cabinets are put together with all the hinges, attachments, and packaging that goes with every order. Orders that come through their main headquarters office now provide shipping info for every box that packs up these cabinets for shipping. From this point, they’re loaded up on trucks and sent to their final destination.

Pricing and warranty

The pricing that you’ll find with Waypoint is balanced with various levels that accommodate many consumers depending on their budgetary requirements. This is one aspect of how Waypoint has become -not only reasonable and affordable through independent cabinet dealers, but an excellent choice for those who also want quality cabinets that last for years. Additionally, they further feature discounts and promotions all year long, making it cost-effective for everyone.

Another fascinating extra is that cabinets ordered from Waypoint Living Spaces offer a lifetime warranty on all of their products. It’s an advantage that’s significant enough to consider since this covers manufacturing defects and material failures. Those who are looking to have quality kitchen cabinets don’t want to hassle with low-quality construction that has a limited warranty. This is why Waypoint has become a top cabinet leader in such a short amount of time and we’ve rated them as one of our top manufactures.
